Parole
denied for cop killer Eileen Kelley, The Cincinnati
Enquirer, Feb. 16, 2011
A panel has
recommended that parole be denied for convicted cop killer
Russell Belll.
Bell and an accomplice, Wayne Reed,
killed Cincinnati police officer Charles Burdsall in July
1978
after Burdsall stymied the duo's attempt to rob a convenience
store.
Burdsall was shot three times at
close range and died while cradled in the arms of another
officer on the street.
Bell,
58, has been in prison more than half his life.
He met with
a panel Wednesday, where he asked to be released from his
life behind bars. It was his fourth attempt at freedom.
The
panel said no and recommended that he come back again in
September 2014. That year is when his accomplice will also
again seek parole.
"Beautiful, that's great news," said
Bret Vinocur of www.blockparole.com, which along with Cincinnati's
police union staged a letter- and e-mail-writing campaign
to the Ohio Parole Board. As of Tuesday afternoon, the board
had received 1,335 letters of opposition for Bell's Wednesday
parole hearing.
It
is rare for the panel's decision to be overturned,
a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department
of Corrections
and Rehabilitation said early Wednesday evening.
